Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state has urged the State Election Commission (SEC) to postpone the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) polls on account of the Rongali Bihu celebration, starting from April 14 in the state.

In this regard, the saffron party has submitted a memorandum to the SEC on Thursday.

In the memorandum, BJP has said that as celebrations will be conducted in most parts of the city and it will be difficult to campaign and hold the polls.

A number of prominent figures of Guwahati also pointed out that holding elections during the scheduled period would cause enormous problems for the people as they will be celebrating the festivals nearly after two years following the pandemic.

On March 23, SEC had announced that the elections to the GMC will be held on April 19 and the counting of votes will be held on April 21.

The total number of voters in the municipal elections is 6,98,829 and the total number of polling stations is 69.

The last day of filing of nomination and scrutiny of papers will take place on April 1, while April 4 is the last day of withdrawal of nomination papers.

After a massive win in Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is eyeing to repeat its victory in the state too as the party has announced to contest GMC.
